Shot over the course of a year from one Halloween to the next, the film is a beautifully rendered portrait of three generations of a working class American family in upstate New York. With elliptical cinematography and an award-winning soundtrack, filmmaker Michael Palmieri and photographer and family member Donal Mosher detail many of the personal trials and tribulations of the Mosher family but, on a universal level, provide an honest insight into what is often too simply described as America's obsession with violence. Engrossing, rich, multi-layered and stunning to watch, the film has been compared to the music of Vic Chesnutt, "Sad, captivating...broken." Winner of the 2009 Silverdocs Grand Jury Prize and nominated for a 2009 Independent Spirit Award for Best Documentary.

Artist Vik Muniz is renowned for making portraits out of unusual objects—sugar, dirt, peanut butter, chocolate syrup. Here, filmmaker Lucy Walker (Blindsight, Countdown to Zero) follows Muniz as he returns to his native Brazil—to Jardim Gramacho, the largest landfill in the world, outside Rio de Janeiro. His plan is to create portraits, constructed entirely out of garbage, of the “catadores” who pick through the rubbish for recyclable items, and to give the profits from their sale back to his subjects. Winner of audience award prizes at the 2010 Sundance, Berlin, Full Frame and Dallas International Film Festivals.
--- Screening before Wasteland is: Crashing Waves (Britta Johnson, 2010, USA, 7min): Two shipwreck victims spend their days on a deserted shore doing remarkable tasks; are they gods, or have they been driven mad by their predicament?
